L.S. Lowry Art Exhibition

Being named The Lowry, it’s no surprise that there is a permanent exhibition about the Manchester-based artist, Laurence Stephen Lowry. As one of the longest standing collectors of his work, it’s an impressive show and a must-see.

L.S. Lowry was a Stretford-born artist famed for his paintings of urban life in industrial Britain, but the exhibition also displays some of his lesser-known rural landscapes too. ‘Coming from the Mill’ – perhaps his most iconic piece – showcases his stylised ‘matchstick men’ in a busy mill scene in 1920s Manchester. His work from this period is a fascinating insight into the impact of the Industrial Revolution on Manchester – the first industrial city.

Free tours of the exhibition are available daily at 12pm and 2pm where a guide will discuss his life and work and they last approximately 20 mins.
