Make the most of this incredible facility with our round-up of the best things on at The Lowry this autumn.
L.S. Lowry Art Exhibition
Being named The Lowry, it’s no surprise that there is a permanent exhibition about the Manchester-based artist, Laurence Stephen Lowry. As one of the longest standing collectors of his work, it’s an impressive show and a must-see.
L.S. Lowry was a Stretford-born artist famed for his paintings of urban life in industrial Britain, but the exhibition also displays some of his lesser-known rural landscapes too. ‘Coming from the Mill’ – perhaps his most iconic piece – showcases his stylised ‘matchstick men’ in a busy mill scene in 1920s Manchester. His work from this period is a fascinating insight into the impact of the Industrial Revolution on Manchester – the first industrial city.
Free tours of the exhibition are available daily at 12pm and 2pm where a guide will discuss his life and work and they last approximately 20 mins.
Expect the Unexpected
Expected the Unexpected is all about exploring the notion of chance as a theme in art. It features artists including the fantastic Yoko Ono, Keith Tyson, Gillian Wearing and Greig Burgoyne. Combining a mixture of film, paintings, photography and performances it’s a treat for the senses and it’s on until 29th September. Chances are, you’ll love it!
The State of Us
The State of Us is on from 10th November to 23 February, digital artists from around the world will examine how the body and self can be transformed or manipulated to create a ‘new self’. This digital show blends technology and creativity to create a truly immersive experience. Sometimes beautiful, sometimes bizarre or even absurd – one thing you can be sure about is that this latest exhibition will never be dull!
